Artist in the Spotlight: Meet Master Yuji Watanabe

Yuji Watanabe is considered one of the most prominent Kokeshi Masters in Japan. His kokeshi are regularly on display in galleries throughout Japan, but rarely overseas. We have the honor to have some of his works available for you to enjoy.

Watanabe Yuji is part of a well-known kokeshi artisan family: the Watanabe family. He is the son of Master Watanabe Masao, a Founding Father of the Sosaku-Creative Movement, and the father of Master Watanabe Kunihiko also a very skillful kokeshi artist.

Kokeshi Art as a sound investment

We often receive the question whether it is smart to invest in Kokeshi Art. We cannot foresee the future, but besides the joy they can bring to your everyday life, we also strongly believe that their value will continue to increase in the future. Especially as their is an increasing demand for the high-end pieces by the Founding Fathers of the Sosaku-Creative Movement. We practice what we preach as we have an extensive private collection ourselves.

Feel free to contact us for investing advice on which kokeshi to buy.

Kokeshi Art and their deeper meaning

Kokeshi sometimes have names with a deeper meaning to them. This beautiful kokeshi Art by Sansaku Sekiguchi is called 麻の葉童女 which translates to ‘Asanoha Girl’, where ‘Asanoha’ refers to the stylized interpretation of hennep leaves as a decorative pattern. This geometric motif is made up of six diamond shapes arranged radially and repeated. The aggregate of triangles means enhanced strength and beauty, protection against evil.
