Fumio Tomidokoro was born in 1948 in Gunma City, Gunma Prefecture. He started making kokeshi at the age of 23 and became independent at the age of 30. He is currently the head of the creative kokeshi artist association. He has received the the Prime Minister's Award three times: In 1999 for his work 'Spring Breeze', in 2007 for his work 'Sunlight' and in 2013 for his work 'Winter Morning'. He has also won many other kokeshi awards including the All Japan Kokeshi Contest in 2019. He mainly keyaki wood (zelkova) give his kokeshi a warmth and exclusive feeling.
