Yoshida Takashi (1948-2007) was a renowned kokeshi master whose work earned him several prestigious awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award. He was born in Kiryu City, Gunma prefecture in June 1948. He studied Design at the Textile Department of Prefectural Kiryu Technical High School. High School. After graduating, he initially worked for a company before embarking on his path as a kokeshi artist. In 1953, at the age of 30, he started his apprenticeship under Master Inosuke Kobayashi. Yoshida created rare and distinctive works in which the natural beauty of the wood became an integral part of the artistic expression. Some of his creations depict women and children with an unusual degree of realism and presence, moving beyond conventional kokeshi forms towards expressive wooden sculpture.
