Fumio Tomidokoro 

Fumio Tomidokoro, born in 1948 in Gunma Prefecture, is internationally recognized as one of the leading contemporary kokeshi artists of his generation. Tomidokoro begins creating kokeshi at the age of 23 and establishes himself as an independent artist by the age of 30. Today, he serves as president of the Creative Kokeshi Artist Association and continues to play an important role in the evolution of modern kokeshi art.

Working primarily with keyaki wood (Japanese zelkova), he creates works known for their warmth, and elegant finish. Throughout his career, Tomidokoro receives numerous prestigious awards, including multiple Prime Minister Awards and major distinctions at the All Japan Kokeshi Contest.
