Kato Tatsuo born in 1940 in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture, is widely respected for his expressive and characterful kokeshi creations. At the age of 20, he develops a deep interest in kokeshi art and begins a ten-year apprenticeship under the renowned master Sekiguchi Sansaku.

Working primarily with keyaki (Japanese zelkova), hiba (Japanese cypress), mizuki (giant dogwood), and enjyu (Japanese pagoda tree) wood, Kato creates kokeshi distinguished by their expressive faces and signature prominent noses.

Tatsuo has won multiple prizes and awards including the prestigious Prime Minister in 2017.
