Created by Yoshida Takashi (吉田多加志, 1948–2007), Fragrant Plum Blossoms (Kōbai) 香梅 is a beautifully sculpted figure distinguished by its softly rounded form and intricate floral carving. The figure’s serene expression and gently bowed head convey a quiet sense of contemplation, while the robe is adorned with a dense pattern of plum blossoms, carefully engraved into the warm, natural wood. Plum blossoms are celebrated in Japan for flowering in late winter, symbolising resilience and the promise of spring. Their presence gives this work a subtle seasonal significance, combining the tactile beauty of the carved wood with the enduring symbolism of renewal and quiet strength.
