Autumn Thoughts (Shūsō) 秋想, by Toa Sekiguchi, is a tall, elegant kokeshi carved from warm-toned wood, with a gently bowed head and closed eyes that convey a sense of quiet contemplation. Her long, flowing form is defined by the natural grain of the wood, while delicate ginkgo leaf motifs decorate the front and side, introducing a subtle reference to autumn. The restrained carving and minimal facial features draw attention to the wood itself and the figure’s inward-looking pose. Through its simplicity and graceful lines, the work evokes the reflective mood of the autumn season.

In Japanese culture, the ginkgo leaf symbolises longevity, resilience and hope. The ginkgo tree is renowned for its extraordinary ability to survive and endure, making it a powerful emblem of strength and renewal. Its distinctive fan-shaped leaves turn a brilliant golden yellow in autumn, evoking the beauty of the changing seasons and the passage of time. The ginkgo is also closely associated with Japanese cities, particularly Tokyo, where it represents vitality and endurance.
