This imperial couple, Kōga (興雅), meaning “Refined Elegance,” by Shozan Shido (志形尚山), presents a sophisticated interpretation of traditional Japanese court figures. The pair stand against a gold folding screen, their elongated wooden robes shaped with elegant, sweeping contours that reveal glimpses of richly coloured decorative patterns. Subtle differences in their headpieces and hairstyles distinguish the emperor and empress, while the natural grain of the wood lends warmth and individuality to each figure. The restrained forms, intricate details and luminous gold background create a harmonious composition that reflects the dignity and refinement of Japanese court tradition.
