This kokeshi is decorated with Wagara patterns. These are traditional, symbolic designs found on Japanese textiles, particularly kimonos. These patterns are deeply rooted in Japanese culture and history, often drawing inspiration from nature, folklore, and daily life. Each wagara pattern carries a specific meaning and is associated with particular seasons, occasions, or wishes.
We love these darker kokeshi by Hideo as they are so distinctly different from mainstream creative kokeshi in the 60s. This only highlights the creative and prominent role Hideo has as an innovator during the Sosaku-Creative Kokeshi Movement.
