This striking kokeshi art by Hideo Ishihara (1925–1999) features an elongated figure with a distinctive sculptural silhouette and a serene face framed by a broad, smoothly carved hairstyle. Made from enju wood (Japanese pagoda tree), the figure combines the natural warmth and grain of the wood with a richly decorated robe in shades of red, ochre and brown. The layered patterns and expressive lines give the surface depth and movement, highlighting Ishihara’s distinctive approach to creative kokeshi, in which traditional woodworking meets a bold, contemporary artistic sensibility.
We love these darker kokeshi by Hideo as they are so distinctly different from mainstream creative kokeshi in the 60s. This only highlights the creative and prominent role Hideo has as an innovator during the Sosaku-Creative Kokeshi Movement.
