This kokeshi by Hideo Ishihara features a striking elongated form, with a sculpted wooden hairstyle framing a recessed face. Fine, dark linework depicting flowers and foliage covers the body, creating a richly layered pattern that interacts with the natural grain and warm tones of the wood. The contrast between the smooth, rounded contours and the intricate, almost textile-like decoration gives the figure a distinctive presence. Through this interplay of carving, drawing and natural material, Ishihara transforms the traditional kokeshi form into an expressive work of wood art.
We love these darker kokeshi by Hideo as they are so distinctly different from mainstream creative kokeshi in the 60s. This only highlights the creative and prominent role Hideo has as an innovator during the Sosaku-Creative Kokeshi Movement.
